On March 12, 1904, E. B. finished her sampler, her final work in handicraft lessons. She must have been very proud at the time, because she embroidered her initials twice: "entwined" and placed at an angle and decorated.
A delicate row with eye stitches separates the alphabet from the saying and a thick border with star stitches "underlines" it: "Sich regen bringt Segen." / "Hard work pays off." No idleness, no laziness - that brings praise, reward, thanks and satisfaction - for many people a motto in life at that time.
Her sampler looks very calm and balanced, also due to the four different small borders that surround the piece.

„Nach gethaner Arbeit ist gut ruhn“ / “After work is done, it is good to rest” - very pretty, balanced and harmonious, creative.
Did Fanny first outline her fabric and then "fill it" with the two alphabets, the series of numbers, the saying and the five squares? Or first of all designed the sampler and then bordered it?
Fanny came from Mülsen, a place in Saxony that stretched for almost fifteen kilometers. The name of the old St. Jakob church stands for an urban district of Mülsen.

At that time, Luise had many beautiful wool colours available for her school sampler - a particular pleasure. Shades of red. Shades of green. Shades of blue. But also kind of exhausting, because the wool threads were thicker than the fabric provided. A lot had to be taken into account: alphabets and numbers, borders and the space for free design with personal data.
Luise's sampler has become extremely harmonious. The two dogs and the numerous small flowers are very lovely. The three little mistakes are not noticeable.

The school task at that time was to work a sampler on a prefabricated piece of fabric. The individual creativity of every girl was required to create something from alphabets, borders, rows of numbers and corner motifs. Very nicely done!
It was very important to W. W. to name her place of residence at the end of her work, more important than mentioning her first and last name. Westermoordorf - a village in the western moor - was first mentioned in a document in 1797 and is located in Lower Saxony near the North Sea.
