SES 1725
The cross stitch sampler SES 1725 is a so-called Saxonia sampler. It is called "the angel with the walking shoes" by its owner Margit Guerrein, who purchased it in 1996.
It is worked in two-sided cross stitch, the original size is 23 x 58 cm. The embroiderer began to work at the bottom. At first simple borders that become more difficult, after that a small delicate alphabet. A decorated alphabet completes this part.
The sampler is defined by the floating angel, carrying a heart and a palm branch. Angels are the messengers from God and the incarnation of God's will in the Old Testament. Some time around the 4th century pictures of angels with a halo and wings appear. The angels carry a messenger's crook:
lilies: symbol of pure virginally love
flaming swords: fighting of the devil
branch of palm: victory, rebirth, etc. (Psalm 92, 12: "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.")
trombones: prophecy of the Last Judgement
Crosses: 164 x 519
Size: 23,5 x 73,5 cm
Stitches: Cross stitches
