The prospective needlework teacher "FH" demonstrated her skills among other things with this part of 30 required samples. She centred the philosophical saying "No cross no crown". It could be translated as “Without trouble / effort / suffering – no benefit / reward / pleasure!” William Penn's book "No Cross, No Crown" is one of the basic texts of Quakerism.
The so-called marking sampler is owned by Lorraine Mootz. It is 33 cm wide, 48 cm high and has a hemstitch border.
